Bernice was just three years old when her father, Charles Grover Aufrichtig, died in 1918.  Her mother Edith married again in 1923. Edith's second husband was Rudolph Stulz, who adopted Bernice and her brother Alois, thereby changing their names from Aufrichtig to Stulz.
